The interior of an Onondowahgah longhouse at Ganondagan, similar to the longhouses found in the villages at MacKenzie-Woodbridge, Boyd, and Seed-Barker. This would have been the living space for up to fifteen people in one extended family. Looking at it with today’s eyes, we see the lack of privacy; the obligation to eat, sleep, work, and play all in the same space. But for the vast majority of Europeans as well as First Nations people living at that time, these surroundings would have felt quite familiar, comfortable, and, if anything, spacious (look at the high ceiling). Nor was the technology used by ordinary people much different — archaeologists have trouble distinguishing contact-era Anishinabe artifacts from early settler artifacts, for example.
